We are the lucky ones cast off and second to only each other. Give us a microphone we'll tell the whole wide world a better story. Give us an ambulance we'll show you the quickest way around the town. This is debauchery; this is an outrage to the congregation. But nobody told us; we subscribe to only our own circulations. Here is the new scene. We broke the mold in half when we came on it. Try to explain us. Oh hell, try to catch us if you can! And we're: Higher than the airplanes carrying our friends to destinations. Reading all the billboards because we care about our education. Standing on the concrete scraping at the foundation, Because we don't belong on the ground. Timing is everything. Let this be our moment under all the bright lights. Forgive all our past mistakes we were too young to fight. This is our livelihood; this is not what we would do on our vacations. We travel lightly but we need your accommodations. Don't bother mixing up your signals we'll sort you out. We know what you think before you even think of thinking of it. And we are the new scene cuz no one told us that we couldn't be. Yeah. How are our predictions? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Battle Accoutrements With a pitchfork in his hand he stands a mighty vexed man Without the courage to sign his name and date the document. First there's a stagger then a rant whilst he proclaims he won't consent To let these brigands connive away his rightful land. But this defiance is only a most convincing means to which we'll shortly see the end. As his expression changes the courtroom rearranges and soon a mob stands ready to defend. Well obvious was their intent: to usurp the old armament. Audacious was their countenance they'd had enough with discontent. And somebody's Grandfather rubbed his hands and thought of the revolution. And somebody's Grandmother closed her hands and prayed for resolution. That January night was wide; it blazed up like a house on fire. That Massachusetts snow was white but blood-stained before half the night was over. Oh what they carried on their shoulders! You could measure clearly by their eyes how taken they were by surprise When veteran neighbors stood behind those cannons slicing through their lines And somebody's Grandfather called a name and said he'd never leave 'em. And somebody's Grandmother held his hand and never stopped believing. She Reminds Me Stars spangle, my eyes are flooding as we speak. And the politics of nightmares tend to lead me to believe That we are lost and wanted, soon forgotten, colorful but not too often. We are black and white and will stay indisposed until we're out of sight. She reminds me when I can't remember why I need company. Elections they take connections, could we escape all detection? Maybe if we hid beneath the New York skyline. What would my line be if you asked me: Please, can we open all these bottles and tomorrow see if we wake up at all? Just Like Me Just like me you don't believe in other countries if you haven't seen them. And like the pictures on the wall you're convinced that you could fall at any moment. If I swam around the Earth I would realize what it's worth And I like the fact that your skin is smoother than your shirt. Just ask my sheets who they want sleeping next to me. Just like me you don't believe in information if you don't know what it means You and me we think the world owes us an explanation but we can't translate spinning around. And gravity gets us down. Poignant Pause I believe your exact words were "please please let's go faster" My thoughts at the time were along the lines of, "I don't know how long this can last." Her pleas and pleases, that's no longer what pleases me; rather, it's strange notions, Like how our emotions are more like motions and less based on me This is not something that will last. This is nothing too eternal. It was a night to remember, a night to rejoice in, a night I decided I found my real voice in. The fireworks were internal, and my stomach was internal, but everything else was a fiction And aloud and I remember hearing the song give the line, and for the first time in my life, which, though not exactly true, struck me as warm and probably went through you the exact same way. The exact, exact same way. (a poignant pause) Stopping to wait in line for the bread and cheese and wine, More than I could handle alone: sitting, wronged, by the phone. It's not that fair. It's not that fair. (a similar pause) Gonna call you Julian, make everyone wash your hair Gonna meet a string quartet, the president may be there Gonna lay down empty sidewalk and if you're kind I'll share Gonna wake up all the neighbors show them how we swear. Gonna make umbrellas dance so they won't put up a fight. Gonna put on fancy pants although they may fit tight. Gonna tear down your defenses in case they think they're right. Gonna wait till court commences which isn't till tonight. Gonna walk in empty handed though it may be a faux paus. Gonna wax so eloquent you cut with a buzz saw. Gonna make up your defections and cover them with gauze. Park in an intersection till I get some applause. Gonna sing to Abigail although she may complain. I just might look through the pale which is in the same vein. Gonna huck two dollar bills and when that gets mundane. I'll shake your hand so much it will squirt out champagne. Natural Causes We slept like piles on the floor and the locks were sticking in the door. I was reading 1984 when she said, "I can't fake it anymore." If we were numbers she'd be one. Some nights don't end when morning comes. I sat back but she tore up and threw our nice clothes out the window. "Oh, I don't want to be mistaken for someone who has a chance to make it," She said as she curled up underneath the blanket that could never cover both of us. And the air was so thick, my head started to spin but I managed to convince myself, If we sit like this and hardly move an inch, we'll eventually have to have it out. I felt the sweat begin to pour. She got that now get this, she still wants more. I looked outside for clues cuz these four walls were wrought with metaphor. White hot, there's no razor like the sun; one cut and we knew our lives would come undone. So we dressed up like cartoons and nonchalantly sought distractions. Adrienne No tears, my dear: Dearest, can you hear this? You should get yourself some rest. Read me poems and rhyme me stories until morning. It was nice to meet you too. I know you lied, I know you lied. It's in your eyes; I know you lied. I know your eyes. It's in your eyes. Congress, distress: The living room was such a mess. I was never one to protest. You were one to lift your dress. I wrote you letters and drew you flowers. In the shower for a couple minutes more. Talk to me; tell me something that I don't know. Tell me something new. | ![]() |
